"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7).
Here, Paul is mentioning an important principle of prayer to overcome anxiety. This could be used for those who are anxious about their own marriage as well as of their loved ones. We all do become anxious as time runs out but our dependence on God in prayer can guard out hearts from premature decisions.
The scripture assures marriage as a divine institution and it is God who gives a godly spouse. This is not to say that there is no human role or responsibility in it. However, in most part of our country, the major rule is to rush people to get married before they are too old (ranging from 20 to 26yrs), from the available pool of options. It could be partly because our society frowns much more upon a 29-year-old single person than it does on an unhappily married 30-year-old with two children. The reaction to shame phenomenon in maintaining an acceptable social order quite often becomes the primary concern. For many people the principle of ‘prayer and waiting before decision making’ becomes a non-issue.
Nevertheless, when you choose a life partner, you’re choosing a lot of things, including your parenting partner, your eating associate, your social life counterpart, your travel escort, your career therapist, your leisure time companion, the influence of your children, someone who expects you to listen to all the stories (sometimes repeatedly!), a retirement friend and a lot more. So a hurried decision is not only unwise but may compromise on the guidance that comes from waiting upon the Lord.
Personal Prayer:
Lord, you declared in Genesis that it is not good for human to be alone (Genesis 2:18). Therefore, lead me with strong hands to the person who will walk with me through the good and the bad. Lord, let my spouse be a person who obeys and loves you wholeheartedly. Prepare his/her heart and my own so that when we find each other we will know that this is only from you! Let the spirit of patience reign in my life until the right person comes. Till such time keep working in me that I will become more like you and suitable to my spouse. Amen
May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
